Asher Edelson has written two books so far. He also is a high school band percussionist.

Asher Edelson laughs at writer's block. He can; he already is the author of two books.

"I have a pretty easy time writing," he says.

With the same confidence he uses against that common enemy of creativity, the H.B. Plant High sophomore overcomes another challenge: Tourette's syndrome. Sometimes the condition, which is characterized by tics, interferes with his craft, causing him to press the backspace or other keys repeatedly.

"At times, I would have the perfect words," he says. "It was very frustrating." At one point Edelson resorted to using a voice-recognition typing program.

The challenge of Tourette's has not slowed him down. By age 13, Edelson had completed the first book in his planned five-title series. He will have a booth at the St. Petersburg Times Festival of Reading on Saturday featuring Adventureland: The Strike of Lightning as well as the second in the series, Adventureland: The Stone of Eons.

"It's nice to get my imagination out there in the world," says Edelson. "It's part of who I am."

That imagination is responsible for the story of Earthly teenagers who enter the realm of Adventureland, where mythology and magic frame their observations of human virtues and vices. In the next installments of the series, Edelson plans to incorporate more mythology including Norse, East Asian and Hindu cultures and figures from history and religion ranging from Irish and Celtic heroes to Achilles. Future books, Edelson says, could include historical fiction and Jewish history.

Edelson balances his writing with the demands of a rigorous high school schedule; he also is a percussionist in the Plant High band and is a member of several school clubs.

"I write whenever inspiration comes," he says.

There are three exciting new things to plan for. First of all, there is a new television show called, 'The Doctors.' They are doing an episode on Tourette Syndrome. They have invited Asher Edelson to come on the show. Yesterday, they were at the house and filmed the family and did interviews. The episode will air sometime in October. They will discuss how Asher has delt with his Tourette Syndrome, "HIS BOOK," etc. We will keep you posted.
He also has two book signing events coming up. One will be at the Upper Tampa Bay Library Saturday, October 11th from 2pm - 4pm.
He is also going to be signing books and selling them at the St. Petersburg Reading Festival (a much bigger event) on Saturday October 25th. This will be at the St. Pete campus of USF - an all day event.
Both of these events will also have other authors involved and speaking (but none of them as interesting as our young Asher Edelson.)

So far the 13-year-old has written two self-published adventure books filled with strange creatures living in a different world.

But watching Edelson type, it’s clear he struggles. At times his head jerks and his fingers cramp. The 8th grader has Tourette’s syndrome, but he doesn’t let his physical tics keep him from writing.

And he wants to send an “anything is possible” to other kids with Tourette’s.

Boy channels real-life challenge into fantasy
Tourette's syndrome sparked movements that became heroic characters in a novel.

Asher Edelson punched the laptop out of frustration, and the screen cracked. Typing was particularly slow for the South Tampa 13-year-old.

Involuntarily, his fingers kept pressing the backspace key, erasing the words of his future novel even as he wrote them.

Asher did not give up. He completed and self-published his novel in October, calling it Adventure Land: The Strike of Lightning.

And he did so despite complications of Tourette's syndrome.

Tourette's syndrome, a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary and repetitive motor and vocal tics, often appears in childhood or adolescence, said Donna Sakuta, executive director of the Tourette Syndrome Association of Florida.

Elizabeth, 44, and Steven Edelson, 45, observed as their son increasingly made unusual movements and vocal noises over the years. They were not familiar with TS until Asher was diagnosed at age 7.

Some of his earliest tics were exaggerated waving arm movements accompanied by explosion-like vocal sounds. The Edelsons nicknamed it "the arm-waving tic."

Asher began to create imaginary characters from his involuntary tics. Hence, an awkward arm gesture became a bold waving of a sword.

And that's how Adventure Land's personages were born.

"When I was about 5 years old, I had this wild imagination," he said.

Over the years, he created a fantastic world populated with mythology-inspired figures. Finally, at age 10, Asher decided to follow his father's suggestion and write a book with all the whimsical stories he had fabricated.

The task took two years to complete and, at the end, Asher had a 440-page manuscript. The original book was split into two shorter novels. The second part will be released in the fall.

Asher attends Coleman Middle School part time and is then homeschooled by his mother. For him, writing was a way to cope with his disorder.

"I think it gives him lots of self-esteem because part of the thing with Tourette's is not fitting in sometimes," his father said.

Coleman principal Mike Hoskinson said the school is very proud that someone as young as Asher had written a fictional book.

"It's neat to see one of our own do well," he said.

Hoskinson said Asher is a talented and creative child who is polite, serious and hardworking.

Asherwas recently invited to talk about his achievement at the Tourette Syndrome Association's sixth annual Family Weekend in February.

Sakuta called Asher an inspiration to others with Tourette's and said his life shows that the disorder need not get in the way of accomplishment.

"I think it's fantastic," Sakuta said. "He demonstrated lots of capacity and ability."

Tourette's syndrome is often misunderstood, she said. People know that it sometimes triggers the involuntary use of obscene expressions, yet that aspect afflicts fewer than one in fiveof those with the disorder. Asher is not one of them.

He tries to control his tics when in the classroom, but it is difficult for him.

"It's like when you have to yawn and you try to hold it back, but you have to do it," his father said.

Asher is not particularly upset about his disorder.

"I don't love having it," he said, "but it's not the end of the world to have Tourette's."

Asher is also affected by executive dysfunction, which is often associated with Tourette's. This trait makes it difficult for him to plan and execute tasks.

"I tell him that because he has Tourette's syndrome, he has to try twice as hard than someone who doesn't," his mother said.

Asher will attend H.B. Plant High School next year, and he hopes to become an accomplished author and an English teacher like Oxford professor J.R.R. Tolkien, who wrote The Lord of the Rings.

Asher plans to write at least eight more sequels to Adventure Land, and he is working on a book about his personal experience with Tourette's syndrome.

Our Editor just informed us that the editing is complete and is sending back the manuscript. Adventure Land: Action Adventure Book - A Blockbuster Hit?
On Tuesday I spoke with one of the main Editors of the first Adventure Land Book. I was calling to get an update as to when to expect her to finish her work. We are waiting to get the manuscript back, so that we can proceed with publishing the book. I was given an unexpected pleasant report. She said that she has read many manuscripts, and done a lot of editing, but she said that she simply loved it. She said that this has blockbuster hit written all over it. She was excited. I was thrilled! Incredibly, she was basing this on what she had read so far. Meaning that she did not even finish it yet. I found this incredible because I have always felt that this book gets better with every page. Just wait until she finishes it. I also told her that if she loves this one so much, that she will love the second book even more. Book two is more powerful in an emotional way. I told her that it might make her cry. She said that it would take a lot for a book to make her cry, but that if it did, she would be thrilled. In other words, it would take a book of high caliber that is well written and extremely imaginitive to stir such emotions. I really believe that this is such a book. Book one is not as emotional. It is exciting and action packed. Just get your hanky ready for book two, thats all I'm saying. We will not see book two until well after book one hits the book stores and Amazon.com. I always knew that Adventure Land was something special, but to have an outside source read it, and then also feel that way is very comforting, exciting, and validating. Asher Edelson, the author, is only 12 years old. How can a 12 year old write such a book you ask? I don't know either. Some kids are good at baseball and are destined to become the next great hall of fame home run hitter. Asher, I believe is destined to become a best selling author. I have tried to write a book, personally, and it just did not work. The ideas did not come. What I did write was not good. Asher, however, has a river of ideas that flow from him like niagra falls. It is inspiring to see him create this story. He has ideas for an entire series of books. He tells me ideas about book ten, and I always tell him to slow down and just focus on book one. Its all cool. But it was good hearing from the editor. I can't wait until you get your chance to read this book. Then we will see if Adventure Land has blockbuster potential. Look for book one - Adventure Land, The Strike of Lightning to be available on Amazon.com late this summer. We will let you know.

Eddy was a dinosaur originally, so he was also rewarded a human form. Eddy isn't the greatest in combat and magic battles, but later on, his experience in fighting grows. Action, Adventure, Fantasy Despite the odds!

Adventure Land is now in the final stages of editing. It is due to hit the publishing presses this summer - we hope. Adventure Land is the new novel written by Asher Edelson, 12 year old author and son of Dr. Steve Edelson. This is Asher's first novel. Adventure Land was originally a 440 page novel that was broken into two books. The first book will be published sometime in the summer of 2007 and will be available through Amazon.com. The book is terrific and is creating excitement. After reading Adventure Land, one has an easy time imagining it as a motion picture and perhaps even in an interactive computer and video game format. Keep you eyes peeled for this one folks!

Adventure Land, The Strike of Lightning is the first Novel. It has Action Adventure and Fantasy throughout and is an exciting read! It has dragons, magic, sword fighting, romance (rated g - remember that this was written by a 12 year old), and even dinosaurs. This book is full of intelligent humor, evil enemies and smart heroes.

Asher Edelson is a great kid. Do you know that he wrote this book between the age of 10 through 12, and that he did so with tourette syndrome. He develops ticks, which are involuntary movements that he can not control. For whatever activity he is involved in, he often times develops a tick for that. So, he has a few ticks for typing and writing, which made the task of writing his book even more of a challenge. It isn't often that a 12 year old writes a novel. Having tourette's makes it even more incredible. I am proud of him. This is not a children's book with little content and lots of pictures. This was a 440 page novel that we had to break into two novels. The first novel will be published this summer by Booksurge, an Amazon.com company.

Periquipa was originally a giant spider. Now he looks more like a large ghost with dark robes and plate mail armor. His skeletal hands wield the power of a wand, and more. Periquipa's two weapons include a powerful, black, spike club, and a long, dark sword. He is extremely powerful with the ways of the sword and the will(magic). He is almost as strong as Lord Lightning, his master.
In Book 2, Periquipa is in a gruesome killing scene.

The men’s chattering and talking stopped immediately. They heard harsh howling, and saw hundreds of wolves suddenly appear over the opposite hill top.
The wolves were all deadly, yet small, about the size of your ordinary large dog. Then, they attacked! One wolf went for Gray, but Bear slashed it with his sword. The other went for a man, but three men stopped it with their spears.
It was a fierce battle, and the wolves killed fifteen of his valuable men. It finally came down to twenty one wolves, which were all huddled together in a pack. They just growled and got ready to charge at the people. The humans went at the wolves one last time to fight.

It began in the beautiful country. The new day blossomed as a warm sunny morning when Bear stepped out of his house, which was in a large tree covered in red flowers. Redflower trees are extraordinarily rare and this one was enormous. These dazzling trees have flowers that turn a different shade of red each season. Bear’s residence was like a medieval dream home. The center of Bear’s home had a cylinder shaped, well-stocked library. The rest of the rooms were surrounding the library on the outer edge of the home. Most of the rooms had beautiful carpets as warm as a sheep’s wool and paintings as colorful as a rainbow. There were antique torches attached to the walls and torch stands lighting up the house along with homey fireplaces. The sweet smell of honey filled the rooms as if they were honeycombs in a beehive.....
This is the beggining of Adventure Land, chapter one.

Also known as Gorglin Thild, the tyrant monster is bent on enslaving the good people of the world and forever changing the landscape to fit his cruel taste. Four teenagers from Earth become entangled in this struggle as they let curiosity get the better of them when they step through a portal into Adventure Land. Now trapped on this hostile and sometimes wonderous world, they find hidden strengths, love, friendship,and sorrow when they become part of this epic tale. Asher even has a tic when typing, but despite this has written over 440 pages of Adventure Land. Quite a task, even for the ordinary 12 year old.
